Background of the recruitment and description of the project
The Disaster Prevention Research Institute (DPRI), Kyoto University invites applications for a permanent Associate Professor position.
Work content and job description
The appointed associate professor is required to use the facilities of the Hodaka Sedimentation Observatory adjacent to an active volcano, Mt. Yakedake, to conduct observational research on sediment yield and runoff processes associated with erosion and collapses caused by rainfall, volcanic activities, melted snow due to volcanic eruptions, and ground water. Using the results of this observation research, the candidate is expected to elucidate the mechanisms of sediment disasters caused by heavy rainfalls, volcanic and seismic activity, and promote research on the prediction of their occurrence, as well as on the advancement of monitoring techniques for sediment dynamics in mountainous areas and their impact on the watershed environment. In addition, the candidate will be proactively involved in the management and operation of the Hodaka Sedimentation Observatory, and collabrate with researchers both inside and outside of DPRI as a core researcher on Sabo Engineering (Erosion Control Engineering) in volcanic areas. In terms of education, the candidate will have responsibility for education in the Department of Civil and Earth Resources Engineering, Graduate School of Engineering, Kyoto University. The candidate must hold a Ph.D. or equivalent degree and be proficient in Japanese.
