[Laboratory]
Biofunctional Catalyst Research Team
RIKEN Center for Sustainable Resource Science
(Team Leader: Ryuhei Nakamura)

[Research Field]
Our group is working on both artificial and biological catalysis. Namely, we are developing electrocatalysts for hydrogen production, CO2 reduction, and other reactions related to clean energy, while also studying the reason behind the diversity of enzymes for amino-acid biosynthesis. While at first glance the two topics may seem distant, both follow the same underlying principles of physical chemistry. Furthermore, we are currently expanding the theoretical framework such that not only activity, but also selectivity, stability, lifetime, self-replication, and other life-like properties can be predicted mathematically. Based on the multi-dimensional evaluation of both artificial and biological catalytic systems, we are pioneering the frontier of truly sustainable energy-material conversion.

[Job title and Job description]
Job title, available positions:
Postdoctoral Researcher or Research Scientist, 1 position

Job description:
We are looking for a member who can predict the theoretical requirements to realize autocatalysis and other emergent phenomena based on a chemical reaction network composed of a set of elementary reactions, and also provide experimental suggestions to verify the theoretical predictions. In order to carry out this research, we are looking for a member with expertise and skills in applied mathematics, dynamical systems, mathematical biology, complexity, chaos theory, chemical reaction network theory, graph theory, microkinetic modelling, density functional theory, computational chemistry, machine learning, data assimilation, numerical simulations, and other related fields. We value the ability to pursue the research actively and independently, while simultaneously being able to communicate and collaborate with fellow team members.

Research Scientist: Carries out research and other work in accordance with group research themes.
Postdoctoral Researcher: Carries out research and other work in accordance with group research themes under the mentorship and training of supervisors.
