1. Number of positions:
One position, three-year fixed term, as Assistant Professor (助教)
This is a non-tenure-track position. GIS has the option of offering two one-year extensions.

2. Starting date:
April 1, 2022

3. Educational and research fields:
GIS invites applications from persons suitably qualified in the field of “English Literature," “British History," “British Philosophy" or “Religion" who can enhance the GIS curriculum. Possible course titles are “UK: Society and People," “Introduction to English Literature," “History of Britain," “Philosophy," “History of Religion in Britain," and others. The successful applicant will teach undergraduate students within our interdisciplinary department in classes that provide a historical perspective and comparative viewpoint. Please refer to the current GIS curriculum on the department website.

4. Teaching duties:
A total of four or five undergraduate content courses per semester (e.g. Introduction to English Literature and British Literature).

5. Administrative duties:
Participation in entrance exam preparation and administration, various departmental and university-wide committees, and other duties as required.
The successful applicant can expect to be involved in teaching and administrative work a minimum of four days per week.

1) Hold a doctoral degree (by position start date) or have demonstrable equivalent research at April 1 2022.

2) Have university teaching experience.

3) Applicants must be capable of conducting classes interactively in English.

4) Applicants must have sufficient proficiency in Japanese to conduct administrative duties. This post is not limited to applicants whose first language is Japanese. Non-native Japanese speakers with a high level of proficiency are also welcome to apply.

5) The ability to work cooperatively with administrators and colleagues.


Salary paid in accordance with Hosei regulations.

For reference:
30 years old (standard: graduated from a 4-year university before March 2014)
Monthly salary of 326,500 yen

35 years old (standard: graduated from a 4-year university before March 2009)
Monthly salary of 408,400 yen

6) A list of courses you have taught and additional courses you plan to teach in your field(s).

2. Application deadline:

3. Selection process:
Short-listed candidates will be notified and given their interview and mock lecture date.

The interview and mock lecture will be carried out at Hosei University, Ichigaya Campus (Tokyo) or online.

Please note that in the case of a face-to-face interview, all costs related to attending the interview and giving the mock lecture will be borne by the applicant.

4. Notification of decision:
Applicants will be notified by November 30, 2021.
