[Laboratory] Laboratory for Vascular Morphogenesis RIKEN Center for Biosystems Dynamics Research (Team Leader: Phng Li-Kun)
[Research Field] The RIKEN Center for Biosystems Dynamics Research (BDR) views the functions of molecules, cells, and organs that support all life stages of organisms as a dynamic system, and aims to elucidate developmental, growth and aging phenomena as well as apply their findings to develop regenerative medicine and diagnostics, thereby contributing to the extension of healthy life expectancies.
The Laboratory for Vascular Morphogenesis is interested in understanding the fundamental morphogenetic principles of how endothelial cells behave and coordinate with each other and the perivascular environment to generate a well-patterned network of blood vessels. Using the zebrafish as a model system, we seek to understand how endothelial cell shape plasticity is regulated to drive vessel formation and remodelling. We also aim to understand endothelial cell mechanoresponse to haemodynamic forces in the control of vessel morphology and patterning. By unravelling the basic mechanisms of how endothelial cells build blood vessels of specific size and network pattern, we aim provide insights into how vascular malformations arise. [Job title and Job description] Job title, available positions: Research Scientist or Postdoctoral Researcher
Position-specific tasks are as follows:
Research Scientist: Carry out research and other work in accordance with research themes of the team.
Postdoctoral Researcher: Carries out research and other work in accordance with laboratory research themes under the mentorship and training of supervisors.
Number of positions: 1 position
Job description: We are recruiting a researcher to join the “Mechanochemical feedback and emergence of tissue function in luminal tissues" project (PI: Li-Kun Phng), a research group within the JSPS Transformative Research Area (A) group grant “Mechanical self-transformation of living systems" (PI:Fumio Motegi, Hokkaido University). Please visit the website below for more information on “Mechanical self-transformation of livingsystems": https://multicellular-mechanics.org/en/
The successful candidate will develop and implement new methodologies to characterize the effects of haemodynamic forces in regulating cellular and subcellular processes using zebrafish and microfluidics. The eventual goal is to understand how the synergy of haemodynamic forces and endothelial cell mechanics shape vascular tubes of correct morphology and optimal size and pattern. The successful candidate is also expected to design and manage his/her research experiments; present research findings; write grants and research papers; and communicate and collaborate with researchers in and out of the laboratory.
