The Radiation Effects Research Foundation (RERF) is seeking junior to mid-career scientists with a Ph.D. or M.D. degree with expertise in bulk and single cell genomics, epigenomics, and transcriptomics to take part in the development and conduct of research programs related to:

1.Identifying genomic- and epigenomic-radiation interactions that influence the susceptibility of individuals to cancer and other outcomes such as cardiovascular disease
2.Discovery of heritable genomic and epigenomic alterations in the offspring following the exposure of parents to radiation after the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki
3.The characterization of radiation-associated tumors using bulk and single cell omics and imaging approaches to identify candidate radiation associated genomic, epigenomic, and microenvironmental features.

These research areas take advantage of biological samples obtained from the individuals exposed to the atomic bombings as well as their children that are unique in the world. Applicants should have a strong record of research including publications in high impact international journals and have an interest in highly collaborative team science approaches.

The Radiation Effects Research Foundation (RERF) in Hiroshima and Nagasaki, Japan, is a binational foundation supported by the Japanese and U.S. governments and has been in continuous operation since 1947. RERF is recognized throughout the world as a leader in the study of radiation health effects and maintains the longest and largest epidemiological study in the world. RERF also follows a clinical cohort whose members have participated in biennial health examinations over a period of decades, and conducts fundamental research on the health effects of ionizing radiation and its interactions with genes, lifestyle, and environment.

Ph.D. or MD. No age limitation. Applicants who have an interest in molecular epidemiology and statistical genetics are also especially encouraged. Laboratory work (bench work) and experience of genome data analysis are required.

We have adopted a salary system generally based on the salary scales for the Japanese government's fixed-term researchers. Other benefits include the provision of social insurance and labor insurance, as well as seasonal and transportation allowances.

Research budget will be provided, but one may also apply for external grants; opportunity to work in a collaborative, international, multi-disciplinary setting with biostatisticians, epidemiologists, and clinical scientists; support for travel to international conferences; support for continuing education and training, in collaboration with Japanese and international research institutions (e.g., Hiroshima University, Nagasaki University, and U.S. National Cancer Institute).
