Position summary:
OIST provides common laboratory facilities and services in each research building, including cold rooms, tissue culture rooms, freezer rooms, general equipment rooms and a glass wash service. As the campus expands, we wish to employ a second “Basic Lab Support Technical Administrator" to provide support for additional buildings.

The “Basic Lab Support Technical Administrator", under the Research Resources Manager of the Provost Office, has the following responsibilities.


Responsibilities:
1. Maintain shared laboratories (Service alcove, general equipment room, low temperature room, cell culture room, etc.) and common equipment and supplies used in these locations, and keep the facility functioning optimally at all times.
2. Assist a new user to use shared laboratories and coordinate arrangement and use of equipment among users.
3. Arrange maintenance and inspection of all basic equipment (Biosafety cabinets, autoclaves, large centrifuges, etc.) that is appropriate to be maintained at the same level with common equipment throughout the university.
4. Prepare documents such as specifications required for purchasing equipment, goods, reagents, and consumables, and to communicate with manufacturers and distributors.
5. Promote the effective use of research resources by operating a "Research equipment redistribution system" in which research equipment no longer needed by one unit/section is used by other unit/section in the University.
6. Operate a glassware washing service on campus by the glassware washing staff.
7. Solve problems to improve the basic research infrastructure and research environment to be shared.
8. Take appropriate trainings and strive to improve him/herself, to improve their operations.
9. Perform other duties as required as a member of the Provost Office as necessary.

Term: Full-time, fixed term appointment for 2 years. Contract initially with 3-month probationary period (inclusive). This contract may be renewed.

Qualifications

1. Ability to manage facilities and support users based on the knowledge and experience in scientific research and research equipment.
2. Ability to handle basic administrative tasks, while having a basic understanding of Japanese law, the structure of government and public offices, and the operation of universities.
3. Good sense of responsibility, fairness and compliance.
4. Ability to collaborate with colleagues and clients in diverse and multicultural settings.
5. Ability to maintain a high level of accuracy and attention to detail
6. Positive attitude to constantly strive to improve operations.
7. Business level communication skills in English.
8. Communication in Japanese preferred.

Compensation

In accordance with the OIST Employee Compensation Regulations

Working Hours:
Flextime (core time 10:00 - 15:00) 7.5hrs per day, (Multiplied by prescribed working days per month)
