Requirements
Applicants should:
(1) Have basic knowledge of statistical mathematics, and be experienced in the application of them;
(2) Be interested in the development of theory and methods of statisticalmathematicsto be utilized in the applicants'
own field of study, and also have flexible mindset to work on technical education at universities as well as
cooperative research with industries;
(3) Have exquisite communication skills to contribute to the activities of the Institute to promote statistics and data
science;
(4) Be strongly conscious on the current topics in statistical mathematics, and are ready to adopt those methodologies to
their own research;
(5) Be keenly interested in solving actual problems by data analysis;
(6) Be motivated to teach statistics at Japanese universities when the period of employment at the Institute is over.

Academic qualification and Japanese ability
PhD or prospect of a PhD being awarded in the near future (including any equivalent degrees awarded by foreign
institutions). If an applicant is a prospect, a letter from his/her supervisor is mandatory which certainly assuresthat the
applicant would be endowed PhD before long. As long as there is no inconvenience in Japanese, candidates are not
discriminated against on grounds of nationality

Duties and responsibilities
Successful applicants will be engaged in:
(1) The professional development programs at the School of Statistical Thinking, in particular the
nurturing-professors-in-statistics project;
(2) Promotion of research in statistical mathematics;
(3) Joint research collaboration, the NOE activity, and other activities promoted by the Institute.

Salary and Conditions:
Salary will be determined on the basis of “annual salary scheme" or “monthly salary scheme" of ROIS and will reflect the
candidate'sseniority. In general, the annual salary scheme will be applied, but the monthly salary scheme will be applied
until a new annual salary scheme under consideration is introduced. If employed by a national university corporation or
an inter-university research institute corporation etc. in Japan until the day before the adoption date, the current annual
salary scheme or monthly salary scheme will continue to apply, but in the future the new annual salary scheme may be
applied.

Documents to be included in the application
Dates should be indicated by following the Western calendar.
(1) Curriculum Vitae:
Begin with the name of the high school which graduated and the day of the graduation.Research/educational history
including working experiences, membership(s) in academic/professional societies, and degrees and awardsreceived
should be indicated.
(2) List of academic achievements
Publications, grouped into categories of original papers, refereed proceedings, other proceedings, commentaries,
books, software, funding records, patents, and others,should be listed in chronological order.
(3) Sample of writing (up to three pieces)
Reprints of some major publicationsshould be attached to the application as a separate document (photocopies may
be used).If online editions of those publications are available, their doi or URL must be also included.
(4) Summary of previousresearch (up to two pages in A4/Letter size)
A historical summary of previous research should be submitted, including an explanation and summary of the
position of the major publications (referred to in (3) above). Do not simply list facts, but write self-assessment so that
the flow and relationships of your research achievements. If you are experienced in any data analysis, briefly
describe what data in which field was analysed and the main analytical method employed.
(5) Research plan (up to two pages in A4/Letter size)
A plan should be drawn up for possible research projects to be conducted at the Institute upon employment, with a
clear explanation of how they relate to those listed in the summary of the previous research. Reference should also
be made to the possible future direction of statistical mathematics and your possible research contributionsthat could
be made therein. Also describe what you can contribute to the professional development programs of the School of
Statistical Thinking.
(6) Social contribution
List any social contributions you have made to academic society, public organization or industry.
(7) Reference
The name and contact details of referee(s)should be indicated (up to three persons). Any recommendation letter
should be enclosed. Once again, if an applicant is still a prospect of PhD, a letter from his/her supervisor is
mandatory which certainly assuresthat the applicant would be endowed PhD before long.
(8) Others
In the process of selection, candidates may be requested to submit copies of other previous publications
