Job content supplemental explanation
Research theme
At TEPCO’s Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station (1F), it is essential to evaluate and mitigate the impacts on the working environment and the surrounding environment in preparation for the full-scale retrieval of fuel debris and related operations.
Radioactive aerosols and micro particles generated during fuel debris retrieval and related activities exhibit complex behavior, which must be accurately understood and evaluated. For this purpose, it is critical to promote integrated research and development covering a wide range of processes, from elucidation of particle generation mechanisms to the development of on-site applicable evaluation and measurement instruments.
Specifically, this includes particle generation tests simulating heating and cutting of fuel debris with complex compositions, phenomenon clarification based on thermodynamic approaches, design and prototyping of classification devices utilizing fluid forces, and integrated performance evaluation with measurement systems. These technical challenges must be addressed from multiple perspectives.
This extremely challenging and pioneering research and development is being promoted at the Collaborative Laboratories for Advanced Decommissioning Science (CLADS), in collaboration with national projects and international discussions such as those at the OECD/NEA, with a view toward implementation at actual decommissioning sites.
In this recruitment, we are seeking candidates who will participate as a member of the research team and work together to advance evaluation methodologies for radioactive aerosols and fine particles toward the decommissioning of the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station. Applicants are broadly expected to possess fundamental knowledge in one or more fields such as thermodynamics, materials science, aerosol engineering, fluid dynamics, or radiation measurement, and to have research experience related to particle generation and characterization tests, analyses using computational fluid dynamics (CFD), or the design, prototyping, and system evaluation of measurement or classification devices.
Through this work, the successful candidate is expected to practically acquire broad expertise and technical skills ranging from aerosol science to field applications, and to grow into a leading specialist in this field in the future. As there are many opportunities to collaborate daily with multinational researchers and interns, motivation for international collaboration and communication in English is highly desirable.
