Job description
Background of the recruitment and description of the project
Laboratory for Chemistry and Life Science (CLS), which consists of five major divisions- “Molecular Synthesis”, “Molecular Materials Design”, “Molecular Functions”, “Molecular Bioscience” and “Molecular Advanced Chemistry”, carries out a wide range of researches on molecular science and engineering, covering not only fundamental and applied chemistry but also life science. By bringing domestic and international research activities together, CLS aims at creating new principles of molecular-based chemistry and bioscience and thereby making breakthroughs for the next generation science and technology. The final goal of CLS is to contribute to the realization of sustainable development of human society through front-line chemical researches.

• Conduct internationally leading research in fundamental chemistry or advanced interdisciplinary fields related to chemistry, including, for example, organic chemistry, inorganic chemistry, physical chemistry, chemical engineering, polymer chemistry, analytical chemistry, theoretical and computational chemistry, electrochemistry, materials chemistry, chemical biology, systems chemistry, and Physical AI.
• Serve as the leader of a research team in the Molecular Functional Chemistry Area of the Laboratory for Chemistry and Life Science. The team will consist of one Associate Professor and two Assistant Professors, including faculty members currently in post. The successful candidate will manage the team and supervise and educate graduate and undergraduate students.
• Teach graduate-level courses in English and undergraduate-level courses in Japanese in the Department of Chemical Science and Engineering and the Chemical Science and Engineering Graduate Major, School of Materials and Chemical Technology.
• Contribute to the administration of the University, the Institute of Integrated Research, the Laboratory for Chemistry and Life Science, and the School to which the successful candidate will be assigned. From AY2028 onward, this will include duties related to the Visionary Initiative (VI): https://www.isct.ac.jp/en/017/research/visionary-initiatives
Note: After appointment, the successful candidate will be expected to conduct the selection processes for two Assistant Professors and establish the research team. The Laboratory for Chemistry and Life Science will provide start-up funding and research space (planned to comprise at least 10 units) to support the establishment of the laboratory. Wages
Annual Salary : 9 million yen ~ 13 million yen

*Annual Salary System with Lump-Sum Retirement Allowance, pursuant to the Institute’s Regulations on Wages for Employees under the Annual Salary System with Lump-Sum Retirement Allowance.
The annual salary for the first fiscal year of employment will be determined in accordance with the current regulations, taking into account the appointee’s age, educational background, work experience, and other relevant factors. From the following fiscal year onward, the salary will be determined on the basis of performance evaluations. A retirement allowance will be paid separately upon retirement.
Typical first-year annual salary for a Professor: JPY 9,240,000
From the following fiscal year onward:
Minimum: JPY 9,140,000
Standard: JPY 10,280,000 (subject to change based on performance evaluation)
Maximum: JPY 12,410,000

• The amounts include the basic salary adjustment and regional allowance. Commuting, housing, dependent, and other allowances will be paid when the applicable eligibility requirements are met.
• The initial annual salary adjustment and performance-based pay (II), equivalent to a bonus, may vary depending on the period between the appointment date and the payment date. In some cases, prior service at a national university or similar institution may be included in the calculation of the period of service.

Work experience
• Applicants must have an internationally outstanding record of achievement in their field of specialization or demonstrate the potential to establish such a record.
• Applicants must be highly motivated to secure large-scale research funding.
• Applicants must be able to supervise graduate and undergraduate students in their own field and related interdisciplinary fields and communicate effectively with students.
• Applicants must be able to teach courses at both the graduate and undergraduate levels, including courses taught in English.
• Applicants must be willing to contribute actively to the duties and activities of the Laboratory and the School.
