Institute for the Advanced Study of Human Biology (ASHBi) was selected by Japan’s Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) as a part of the World Premier International Research Center (WPI) Program, and it was established within Kyoto University Institute for Advanced Study (KUIAS)on 30 October 2018 with Mitinori Saitou, a world-leading developmental biologist, at its head.
ASHBi is now looking for a Program-Specific Assistant Professor in the laboratory of Professor Guillaume Bourque (Comparative Epigenomics Group).
Work content and job description
ASHBi will investigate the core concepts of human biology with a focus on genome regulation and disease modeling, creating a foundation of knowledge for developing innovative and unique humancentric therapies. The key goals are:
1) to achieve outstanding research in key individual themes in human biology in the area of reproduction, development, growth and aging as well as heredity and evolution;
2) to elucidate the principles for the emergence of species differences among humans, non-human primates, and rodents for proper extrapolation of the findings in model organisms to humans;
3) to generate primate models for key gene functions and intractable diseases;
4) to reconstitute key human cell lineages and tissues in vitro and validate their properties based on integrative information; and
5) to contribute to formalize an ethics for the use of human/non-human primate materials and create a philosophy to direct the values of the Institute’s research outcomes.
ASHBi Bourque Group aims to understand human epigenome that underlies complex biological phenomena, such as cell differentiation, development, evolution and human diseases. To achieve this goal, we use cutting edge bioinformatics and genomic technologies, such as RNA-seq, ChIP-seq, Cut&Tag, ATAC-seq, lentiMPRA and CRISPR (epi-)genome editing in combination with iPS cell and single-cell technologies. The candidate is expected to perform high-level research and the research related work together with Associate Professor Fumitaka Inoue, co-PI of Bourque Group and act as the leading researcher in human biology and the related fields.

(Just after hiring) In October 2019, Prof. Satoshi Maeda (Director of Institute for Chemical Reaction Design and Discovery (WPI-ICReDD), Hokkaido University) launched a new research project entitled “Artificial Intelligence in Chemical Reaction Design and Discovery" under a commitment by JST ERATO. In the project, we will create new methodology that predicts innovative chemical reactions by combining technologies of automated reaction path search by Artificial Force Induced Reaction (AFIR) and combinatorial optimization.
The successful candidate will join the group of automated synthesis (Yuuya Nagata, Specially Appointed Associate Professor in ICReDD) to develop the innovative chemical reactions through the combination of theoretical calculations and automated robots specially designed for organic synthesis.

Prof. Varnek's group deals with development of models based on Neural Network Potentials, which reproduce energy and gradients obtained at DFT level of theory. Such models can significantly accelerate reaction path searches compared to time consuming quantum calculations.
In this context, the candidate will have the opportunity to work on the following research topics:

We are seeking outstanding applicants for Postdoctoral Fellow positions at QUP in theoretical physics with a strong background in areas such as particle phenomenology, cosmology, astroparticle physics as well as quantum field theory applications. Preferred candidates will also be interested in bridging theoretical work with experiments and observations in order to discover new physics.
Successful candidates are expected to interact and collaborate with QUP Principal Investigators Kazunori Nakayama and Volodymyr Takhistov, as well as conduct independent research. Postdoctoral Fellows will benefit from interactions with QUP experimentalists who are involved in and lead a variety of international projects, including novel dark matter searches in laboratories as well as space missions for cosmology and astrophysics.
