The IRCN (International Research Center for Neurointelligence) was established on October 10, 2017 with a 10-year mission: to create a new discipline at the interface of human and artificial intelligence from the perspective of neurodevelopment and its disorders. Great technical strides are prying open the black box of the brain, while artificial deep-learning algorithms can now defeat Go masters. Yet, we are still far from understanding the general and flexible intelligence characteristic of humans. IRCN seeks answers in the underlying principles of neural circuit development and how it goes awry in psychiatric disorders. This promises new insights for truly neuro-inspired artificial intelligence (A.I.) and innovative, computational approaches to better understanding the human condition. Ultimately, such an approach will encompass the fruits of human intelligence - the humanities and social sciences. Come share our quest, key collaborations, state-of-the-art core facilities and unique culture!

Machine learning with big labeled data has been actively investigated and its effectiveness has been demonstrated. However, in many application domains, it is difficult or even it is not possible to collect a large amount of labeled data. In the Imperfect Information Learning Team, for various machine learning tasks including supervised learning, unsupervised learning, and reinforcement learning, we develop novel algorithms that allow accurate and robust learning from imperfect information. We also elucidate their theoretical properties and apply them to various real-world applications ranging from fundamental science to business. The successful candidate is expected to develop algorithms of weakly-supervised learning, analyze theoretical properties, and perform experiments individually. Supervising interns and part-time students as well as supporting industry projects and academic event organization are also expected.

In our laboratory, we study the regulatory control of neuron differentiation. Neurons form among the most complex and diverse structures of any cell type, and this has critical relevance due to its disruption causing neurodevelopmental disorders. We use state-of-the-art combinations of genetics, molecular cell biology, in vivo imaging of cell differentiation, and machine learning-based image analyses to explore and test our hypotheses. We are recruiting postdoctoral researchers or research scientists with strong backgrounds in genomics, bioinformatics, protein biochemistry, in vivo imaging, and computational image analysis for the following two projects:
Project 1) This project uses the development of Drosophila peripheral sensory circuits as a model. This position requires the relevant skills and experience in Drosophila genetics and molecular biology to take over and assume responsibility for finalizing a close-to-completion, large project examining the role of transcription controls and the in vivo imaging and biochemistry of microtubule nucleation pathways that act in da neuron growth.
Project 2) This project uses human cortical neural precursor and neuron culture as models. In this project, we manipulate the signaling pathways that initiate and control the neuron differentiation process. It uses a combination of genomics, molecular biology, and live imaging to understand molecular mechanisms of human cortical neuron differentiation.

The Computational Group Dynamics (COGNAC) lab focuses on the computational underpinnings and eco-evolutionary implications of human collective behaviour and cultural evolution. Using mathematical and agent-based modelling, coupled with large-scale, online real-time behavioural experimentation, we are quantitatively studying principles of collective behaviour and its implications to the modern human societies.
[Background of the project]
The research scientist or postdoctoral researcher will be contributing to a project entitled “Computational bases of human social learning, collective decision making, and cultural evolution in a heterogeneous, biased population”. In this project, we study how (1) individual differences and (2) individual biases, in both behavioural strategies and subjective values, interact with each other to shape the population-level behavioural and cultural dynamics. To approach these questions, we will combine computational modelling with large-scale behavioural experimentation, leveraging the cross-disciplinary collaboration opportunities both in RIKEN and other collaborating institutes world widely.
This project will be based at RIKEN CBS, Wako, Japan, with various collaboration possibilities inside and outside of RIKEN. The successful candidate will also be encouraged to network cross-disciplinary and internationally.
