The Institute of Multidisciplinary Research for Advanced Materials (IMRAM), Tohoku University, is seeking qualified candidates for the position of postdoc. The selected individual will engage in research activities focused on solid-state ionics and solid-state batteries in close collaboration with Distinguished Prof. Jürgen Janek at Tohoku University and other members of IMRAM. While both research aimed at realizing high-performance solid-state batteries and fundamental research focused on elucidating underlying mechanisms are highly valued, we also welcome candidates with original and innovative research ideas that go beyond.

IMRAM identifies research in solid-state batteries and solid-state ionics as a core area for addressing urgent societal challenges from a multidisciplinary perspective. These challenges include energy sustainability, environmental preservation, and the responsible use of resources. The appointed researcher will play a leading role in the development of new materials and energy conversion devices, in collaboration with Prof. Jürgen Janek, to provide fundamental and transformative solutions to these issues.
The successful candidate will work synergistically with ongoing cutting-edge research at IMRAM, such as the development of novel battery materials (led by Prof. Itaru Homma and Assoc. Prof. Saneyuki Ohno) and advanced operando analysis of materials and devices using synchrotron radiation (led by Prof. Koji Amezawa and Assoc. Prof. Yuta Kimura). The position aims to establish an internationally recognized research hub for next-generation energy technologies through these collaborations. This recruitment is part of a project associated with the "University for International Research Excellence" initiative, for which Tohoku University was the first institution to be certified in Japan.

We are seeking a highly motivated postdoctoral researcher to contribute to pioneering work in sustainable fuel combustion modeling. The focus will be on developing compact, predictive kinetic models for real-world sustainable aviation fuels (SAFs), including novel fuel blends such as ammonia–hydrocarbon mixtures. Candidates will work on the enhancement of the innovative kinetic modeling methodology through AI/ML integration, supporting the accurate modeling of combustion properties and pollutant formation for a wide range of fuels. Key areas of research include:
● Development of machine learning-assisted kinetic modeling frameworks for complex fuel mixtures.
● Investigation of pollutant formation mechanisms (e.g., PAHs, NOx, SOx) and mitigation strategies in sustainable combustion.
● Simulation and validation of ignition, flame propagation, and pollutant emissions using experimental data and computational fluid dynamics tools.
● Extension of the modeling approach to include low-temperature oxidation and ammonia co-firing for internal combustion engines.

東北大学未踏スケールデータアナリティクスセンターにおいて、JST CREST革新的計測解析領域の研究課題「材料デジタルツインで加速する磁性デバイス開発」に関する研究に従事いただきます。
