Job description

  • Background of the recruitment and description of the project

    We are pleased to announce that the English Language Institute (ELI) at Kanda University of International Studies (KUIS) is recruiting for the position of Director for April 2025.

    KUIS is a private university dedicated to the pursuit of excellence in the areas of foreign language education, intercultural communication, linguistics, and culture studies. The university opened in 1987 and the University now comprises two faculties: (i) The Faculty of Foreign Languages and (ii) The Faculty of Global Liberal Arts. The Faculty of Foreign Languages has four undergraduate departments: English, International Communication, Asian Languages, and Ibero-American Languages. The university also grants an MA in TESOL, and MA and PhD degrees in linguistics. KUIS is fully accredited by Japan's Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology. Approximately 4000 students are presently enrolled. The KUIS campus is situated in Makuhari, Chiba Prefecture, which is approximately 30 minutes by train from central Tokyo. The university is set in an educational zone with other universities and educational institutions.

    The ELI was founded in 1989 with four full-time members. It employs 60+ lecturers, representing a diversity of nationalities and backgrounds. The ELI cooperates with the aforementioned departments to provide all first- and second-year students with a progressive English language education.

  • Work content and job description

    The position requires the following duties equivalent to 8 class hours (1 class hour is 90 minutes) per week:

    Administrative duties
    Duties related to the administration of the ELI, including but not limited to:

    ・lecturer supervision (research, teaching and faculty development)
    ・senior coordinator supervision and collaboration
    ・collaboration with university management and university departments
    ・holding staff meetings
    ・cooperating with the Admissions and Communications Division of the university
    ・together with the Senior Coordinator management team, running the orientation session for newly hired lecturers
    ・attendance at faculty and other committee meetings (conducted in either English and/or Japanese)
    ・lecturer recruitment (domestic and overseas)

    ・teaching English related courses
    ・creating and updating curriculum for the English related courses
    ・conducting research

    Annual Salary : 10 million yen ~ 12 million yen

    The annual salary includes annual bonuses and administrative duties allowances. In addition research funds are provided. Health insurance, welfare pension insurance, workers compensation insurance, and employment insurance are offered.

    Working hours :09:00-18:00

    Overtime and other explanations : Possible working hours are 9:00-18:00 (1st period 9:00-10:30, 2nd period 10:40-12:10, 3rd period 13:10-14:40, 4th period 14:50-16:20 and 5th period 16:30-18:00). Actual working hours depend on classes taught, meetings, and other matters necessary as the ELI Director.

Qualifications

  • Education and Degree Requirements

    Ph.D. / Doctor / Master

    Ph. D / Ed. D / Master in a relevant field.

  • Work experience

    (1) Ph.D. / Ed. D in a relevant field strongly preferred.
    (2) Experience teaching at the university level.
    (3) Ability to teach undergraduate classes, and preferably with experience teaching students who use English as a second or other language in Japan.
    (4) Experience supervising lecturers in multicultural educational settings in a senior management position .
    (5) English language ability must be at native-equivalent level. Japanese language skills necessary for university duties and operations.

    The initial contract will be for a period of three years (2025/4/1 to 2028/3/31).
    The ELI Director hired under the KUIS tenure-track system is subject to yearly assessments and a formal internal review of their performance in education, research and ELI / university administration in the third year after the appointment. If the the review criteria are met, the position will be changed to a tenured position until retirement..

Selection / Notification of result

  • Selection

    The application process is based upon documentation review and interview. Candidates selected for an interview will be contacted by early September of 2024. Interviews will be conducted by early October of 2024 and will be conducted in English and partially in Japanese. Interviews can take place online via Google Meet if necessary.


    Note: Applicants who are currently overseas are welcome to apply. However, the selected candidate will be expected to have completed all necessary documentation for employment–including any necessary visa documentation–and relocated to Japan no later than April 1, 2025.
    ***Transportation expenses for in-person interviews will not be paid.
