Background of the recruitment and description of the project
Through policy-oriented academic research, JICA Ogata Sadako Research Institute for Peace and Development (JICA Ogata Research Institute) intends to enhance the effectiveness of development cooperation in developing countries and contribute to formulation of the international development cooperation trend. Applicants to this post are expected to contribute to the promotion of JICA Ogata Research Institute research projects in collaboration with other researchers and practitioners.

JICA has been implementing projects related to the Japanese immigrants for many years. The projects began with migrant outbound projects, then moved on to the assistance for the Japanese immigrants, and then expanded to the collaboration projects with the communities of Japanese immigrants. JICA Ogata Research Institute for Peace and Development (Development Cooperation Strategy Cluster) is currently conducting several researches on the history of Latin American migration, and intends to conduct research to clarify the contribution of JICA's overseas migration projects to the development of the communities of Japanese immigrants and the development of countries which accepted the Japanese immigrants from a broader perspective, while taking into account the humanities and social sciences.

Work content and job description
[Target area]
Research on: the development of the communities of Japanese immigrants and its contribution to the development of each country through overseas migration projects
(1) Research on Latin American migration
(2) Research on the development process of the communities of Japanese immigrants and its impact on the development of countries which accepted the Japanese immigrants
(3) Research on Latin American regions (history, sociology, education, development studies, diplomatic history and politics, etc.)
[Work description].
(1) Formulation of new research projects (literature review, development of research hypotheses, etc.)
(2) Conducting research (exchanging opinions with co-researchers, project department officials, external experts, etc., organising research meetings, following up on international discussions in related fields, planning and conducting surveys to collect research data, writing research results (articles, policy notes, books, etc.), etc.)
(3) Disseminating research results (presentations at seminars, conferences, international meetings, etc., lectures at universities and training projects, contributions to results dissemination events, contributions to the Institute's website, etc.)
(4) Other related tasks, including liaison and coordination related to (1) to (3) above.
In the implementation of the work, it is expected that new research will be formed in line with the direction of the work of JICA and JICA Ogata Research Institute for peace and Development, but may be asked to participate in research projects already underway or planned as a research contributor. In conducting research, active collaboration with relevant departments (e.g. JICA Latin America and the Caribbean Department, JICA Yokohama International Center/Japanese Overseas Migration Museum, etc.) is encouraged.

Description
1.All of the following conditions must be met.
(1) In principle, the applicant should have or be expected to obtain a PhD in a field related to the above work by the time of joining.
(2) Have a track record of publishing papers (preferably in English) or presenting at conferences in fields related to the above work, and have high communication skills to carry out international research exchange and policy dialogue.
(3) The candidate should be actively involved in the organisational research agenda of JICA Ogata Institute and have a high level of motivation to carry out interdisciplinary research in collaboration with other researchers and other personals.
(4) The candidate must have a level of English language proficiency that will not hinder the performance of his/her duties, such as ensuring the quality of research outputs and facilitating proceedings at international conferences. (a) TOEIC score of 800 or above, (b) TOEFL (PBT) score of 574 or above, (c) TOEFL (CBT) score of 230 or above, (d) TOEFL (iBT) score of 89 or above (approximately).
(5) Specialist knowledge and experience of the Latin American region
2 The following knowledge or experience is desirable.
(1) Research experience in development and international cooperation projects in developing countries.
(2) Experience of working in development cooperation agencies, International Organisations, etc.
3. This position is open to all nationalities. Applicants of foreign nationalities are required to have appropriate visa/permission to work in Japan, or have prospect for obtaining such visa/permission without problem.
It is preferable to have Japanese language proficiency to the extent that it does not impede daily conversation.
