Job description
Background of the recruitment and description of the project
We seek a specialist in Political Science, with preference given to a focus on Japanese Politics. We welcome applicants with any specialization within this field who can demonstrate competence to teach the courses listed in Section 2 (Work Responsibilities) below.
Work content and job description
The successful candidate will be required to perform the following core tasks:
1) Teaching undergraduate courses in SILS (as a member of the Governance, Peace,Human Rights and International Relations Cluster)
2) Contributing actively to the research development of the University (independent research activities, international publications, applying for research funding,organizing conferences, engaging in academic life with SILS members)
3) Fulfilling administrative duties in SILS as required by the University (entrance examinations, committee work, etc.)
The candidate is expected to teach Introductory, Intermediate and Advanced Coursesin Japanese Politics in English.
Our ideal candidate is an engaging and dedicated teacher, who teaches our students to read and think critically, introduces them to some primary political science sources on Japan and covers the fundamentals of Japanese politics with relevant academic approaches.
The candidate should teach the following core courses:
・“First Year Seminar,” “Intermediate Seminar” and “Advanced Seminar”
・“Contemporary Japanese Politics” or “Government and Politics of Japan” or“Rational Choice Theory and Japanese Politics”
・“Introduction to Political Science”
In line with the candidate’s area of research and interest, they should be responsible for at least one of the following courses:
・“Quantitative Analysis in Social Sciences”
・“Introduction to Political Methodology”
・“Voting Behavior”
・“Mass Media and Politics in Japan”
・“Modern Political History”
・“Urban Politics”
Note: We are on a 14-week semester system, in which each class period (koma)lasts 100 minutes. In general, a full-time faculty member teaches at least ninekoma a year, with four or five koma per week each semester.
While this is an undergraduate teaching position, there may be opportunities toteach, supervise or co-supervise MA- and PhD-level students by collaboratingwith other faculties within the University.

As for research work, the Discretionary Labor System of Japan (Deemed working hours: 8 hours/day) applies.
Hence, working hours for research as well as how research should proceed are at the discretion of each faculty member.

Selection
After document screening, interview, which will include a mock lecture and research presentation, will be conducted for selected applicants on May 31, 2025.
In principle, interviews are conducted in person at Waseda University (Tokyo), with the possibility of having them online.
Travel expenses are to be borne by each applicant.
