Job description

  • Background of the recruitment and description of the project

Cognitive Science is the interdisciplinary study of human cognition and behavior encompassing the fields of philosophy, psychology, linguistics, computer science and AI, neuroscience, and anthropology. In our liberal arts program, some gaps remain in these fields, and we seek a candidate who can complement our existing program through expertise in the field of computational study of cognition.
We particularly welcome candidates well versed in classic cognitive architectures, such as, connectionist modeling and ACT-R, capable of teaching computational modeling to liberal arts students at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels. In addition to giving undergraduate lectures, the candidate is expected to have the experience and/or capacity to teach courses for MA and PhD students and direct their research.
Furthermore, the candidate is expected to maintain an active research record in scientific studies of human cognition (e.g., vision, social cognition, decision-making, memory) through a computational approach.

  • Work content and job description

The successful candidate will be required to perform the following core tasks:
    1) Undergraduate teaching in the School of International Liberal Studies (SILS)
    2) Contributing actively to the research development of the University (independent research activities, international publications, fund-seeking applications, conference organization, collegial academic life with SILS and Graduate School of International Culture and Communication Studies (GSICCS) members)
    3) Fulfilling administrative duties in SILS and GSICCS as required by the University (entrance examination, committee work, etc.)

    Example classes could include:
    SILS
    - First Year Seminar, Intermediate Seminar, Advanced Seminar
    - Introduction to Cognitive Architectures (introductory level)
    - Social Cognition (intermediate or advanced level)
    - Human and Artificial Intelligence (intermediate or advanced level)
    - Computational Modeling of Human Cognition (intermediate or advanced level)

We also welcome suggestions for other courses, provided that they do not overlap with our existing courses. Before making suggestions, please check our existing courses by searching on our Syllabus Search system:

Note: We are on a 14-week semester system, in which each class period (koma) is 100 minutes long. In general, a full-time faculty member teaches at least nine koma a year, with four or five koma per week each semester.
While this is an undergraduate teaching position, there is the possibility of supervising MA-level and PhD-level students jointly with other faculty members within the School.
