Japan Atomic Energy Agency

Research field : Frontier Technology - Unspecified | Energy Engineering - Quantum beam science

Researcher/Postdoc level : Regular employee - Tenured - Non-tenure track - Probationary period present

Job description

  • Background of the recruitment and description of the project

The Nuclear Safety Research Center of the Sector of Nuclear Safety Research and Emergency Preparedness implements research activities to construct evaluation methods for reliability of components in nuclear reactor facilities, severe accident progression and associated radionuclide release characteristics to the environment (source term), and for response and fragility of structures and components in the event of earthquake. These methods are applied to research on probabilistic risk assessment (PRA) to derive risk information.

  • Work content and job description

In this research, risks of nuclear reactor facilities with a focus on light water reactor for power generation are assessed, including evaluation of uncertainties and risk significance, for both cases that a severe accident is caused by internal events and by external hazards such as natural phenomena. On the basis of the results of the risk assessment, risk management measures are examined and PRA methods are continuously improved. In addition, a simulation-based dynamic PRA method, which is capable of reflecting time-dependent status of a nuclear reactor facility into the risk assessment, are developed and applied. These studies will be able to contribute to the promotion of risk-informed decision making for activities relevant to safety ensuring and improvement.
