  Research on materials degradation and structural integrity in reactor components and structures of LWR.
  
  (Summary)
  The Materials and Structural Integrity Research Division, Nuclear Safety Research Center, Sector of Nuclear Safety Research and Emergency Preparedness, promotes the research to improve the reliability of future prediction of materials degradation and methodology of structural integrity assessment for the age-related deterioration in reactor components and structures during long-term operation of light water reactors (LWRs).
  In this research, mainly for the boundary components of primary coolant of LWRs, such as reactor pressure vessels and piping systems, for the purpose of understanding the behavior of materials degradation caused by neutron irradiation, corrosion, etc. during long-term operation and quantifying the their effects on structural integrity of the components, the applicant performs machanical tests and microstructural analyses of neutron-irradiated materials, development of the methodology of statistical analysis, and maintenance of the probabilistic fracture mechanics analysis codes. In addition, the applicant will also be in charge of the development and maintenance of the technique on evaluation and simulation of non-destructive inspection planned by JAEA. These works will contribute to the technical evaluation of safety regulations for LWRs conducted by the nuclear regulation authority.
