Background of the recruitment and description of the project
The School of Cultural and Creative Studies at Aoyama Gakuin University, Tokyo, is an emerging institution founded in 2008 which prepares students with the creative acumen and practical knowledge necessary to pursue careers in a range of cultural and artistic fields. We currently seek two enthusiastic academics to teach English-language courses on Japanese Studies as full-time, non-tenured assistant professors (jokyo), with an aim to both strengthen students’ understanding of Japanese culture and society from a global viewpoint, and increase students’ ability to communicate their own perspectives on an international stage.

Successful applicants will be responsible for teaching “Japanese Studies through English” and “Topics in Japanese Studies.” Each of these courses may be divided into multiple class sections (individual student groups) depending on enrollment, and between both courses successful applications are expected to teach a total of four classes (four 90-minute class periods or koma) per week.
In addition to teaching, successful applicants are expected to provide ancillary support during annual entrance examinations, and to participate in other departmental tasks related to education, research, and administration. Hired applicants are also encouraged to pursue individual research and publishing activities in their field of study.

Salary will be determined in accordance with the employment and salary regulations of Aoyama Gakuin School Corporation, based upon the hired applicant’s academic background and employment history.

Holidays : Two days off per week

Doctoral candidates expecting to recieve their PhD's by the start date of April 1, 2025, are welcome to apply.
Description
Applicants are expected to satisfy all of the following conditions:
1) Be a native speaker or possess native-level fluency in the English language
2) Have earned a PhD by the starting date of April 1, 2025, preferably in a field related to Japanese studies
3) Have published at least two pieces of original research (academic papers or books, not including master’s or doctoral theses) related to Japanese studies
4) Be capable of teaching the assigned courses and participating in the other departmental duties described above, including providing support for annual entrance examinations (these departmental duties require business level Japanese language skills).
5) Understand the founding spirit of Aoyama Gakuin University, as an institution established based on Christian faith
Note: While not a requirement, previous experience teaching in English at a college or university level is an advantage.

In a brief English-language essay, describe your philosophy and methods for teaching topics related to Japanese studies in English, and to a group of primarily Japanese undergraduate students, in a practical and effective way that improves both their academic mindset and English-language skills (approximately 1000 words, within 2 pages).

1. First round: review of documents
