Job description

  • Background of the recruitment and description of the project

    The Faculty of Global Studies at Sophia University (Jochi Daigaku) seeks a scholar who is interested in becoming a faculty member in the Japanese academic year 2026. We will accept applications from those who satisfy and are willing to comply with the requirements mentioned below.

  • Work content and job description

    [Area of research and discipline]
    We require applicants to have a good knowledge of the recent trends in global studies and a high degree of specialization in History of International Politics. We particularly need an expert who can teach undergraduate courses on Political and Diplomatic History and Foreign Policies in Asia Pacific.

    [Subjects to teach]
    We require a new faculty member to teach 4 or 5 courses in both the spring and autumn semesters (most likely 8 or 9 courses and omnibus courses) from the following categories during the year, and to supervise graduation theses of some students.

    (1) 2 or 3 courses on History of International Politics and Foreign Policies numbered 300-399 (2 credits) or 400-499 (2 credits)
    (2) Freshman Seminar in Japanese (2 credits in the autumn semester)
    (3) Seminar on History of International Politics and Foreign Policies in Japanese (2 credits in the spring semester and 2 credits in the autumn semester)
    (4) A course numbered 200-299 (2 credits)
    (5) Possibly, parts of the omnibus courses numbered 100-199 (e.g., Introduction to Global Studies, 2 credits)
    (6) In the case of employment as a full or associate professor, a seminar in the Graduate Program for International Relations at the Graduate School of Global Studies (2 credits in the spring semester and 2 credits in the autumn semester)
    (7) A SPSF* course in English numbered 200-299 (2 credits) or 300-399 (2 credits)
    (8) Possibly, a SPSF course on Academic Skills in English numbered 200-299 (2 credits) or a seminar (2 credits)
    (9) Possibly, an elective course on general studies numbered 100-399 open to all the undergraduate students of the university (2 credits)
    (Scope of Change) The duties determined by the Sophia School Corporation

    *Sophia Program for Sustainable Futures (SPSF) is the new English medium degree program which started in September 2020 and its courses are all taught in English.

Selection / Notification of result

  • Selection

    After screening the documents in your application, we may request you to send us some of your works or copies of them. Also, interviews and trial lessons in Japanese and English may be required.

  • Notification of result

    The Dean of the Faculty will send you a letter or an email to notify you of the results of selection of the Faculty by the end of October, 2025 at the address you mention in your CV. Those who passed the selection of the Faculty will be required to have interviews with Chancellor and Trustee for Personnel Affairs of the Sophia School Corporation as well as with President of Sophia University.
