Work content and job description
(1) Undergraduate: Teaching specialized subjects ("History of English Literature I/II(英文学史I/II)", "Studies of Foreign Literature(外国文学研究)", "Reading English Literature I/II(英文学講読)", "Special Topics in Literature and Culture", "Seminar in English Language and Literature I/II(英米文学語学演習I/II)", "Introduction to Literature and Culture", "Introduction to Academic Writing", "Graduation Thesis(卒業論文)"etc.), English language classes, teacher training courses, etc.
*For courses with English titles only, classes will be conducted in English.
*Due to upcoming curriculum changes, there may be changes to your assigned courses, including the possibility of teaching an omnibus class on film adaptations.
(2) Postgraduate: Teaching subjects (“Special Studies in English Literature II-1/II-2(英文学特論II-1/II-2)” etc.)
(3) Evaluating MA theses and PhD dissertations in the Graduate School of Education; being part of oral examination committees

Supplementary explanation of compensation
1. Working hours
Regular working days and working hours (starting and ending times, rest periods) shall be in accordance with Waseda University regulations. The discretionary labor system for professional work (8 hours of deemed work per day) will apply, and decisions on the means of performing work duties and time allocation for research will, due to the nature of research work, be left to the discretion of the individual.
2. Salary, allowances, and commuting expenses
As prescribed in the Waseda University regulations.
3. Holidays
Saturdays, Sundays, year-end and New Year holidays, national holidays, compensatory holidays when classes are held on some national holidays, and the Anniversary of the University Founding. Excluded: days on which the university has determined in advance that classes will be held.
4. Leave
Leave as stipulated by the Labor Standards Act and other relevant laws and regulations, and days specifically designated by the university.
5. Social insurance
Workers’ Compensation Insurance, and Employment Insurance. If hired as full-time faculty: To be paid in accordance with the Waseda University regulations.
6. Severance / retirement benefits
If hired as tenure-track faculty: Not paid. However, if the individual concerned is subsequently hired as a tenured faculty member, the period of employment on which the basis of the retirement allowance for full-time faculty members is calculated shall be counted from their date of appointment as a tenure-track faculty member before the change of status.

Decision regarding full-time or tenure-track will be made after initial hiring decisions based on a comprehensive assessment of research and educational achievements.
(1) Status if hired as a full-time faculty member: Professor, Associate Professor, or Assistant Professor (Lecturer, "Koshi")
(2) Status if hired as a tenure-track faculty member: Assistant Professor (Lecturer, "Koshi" tenure-track)
(3) When hired as a full-time faculty member: No fixed term *Retirement age: 70
(4) When hired as a tenure-track faculty member: 3 years
4-1) After the expiration of the term, reappointment may be made up to two times for a period not exceeding two years each time. The total period of continuous employment as a tenure-track faculty member may not exceed seven years.
4-2) The method for determining reappointment as a tenure-track faculty member or change of status to a full-time faculty member shall be in accordance with the regulations of the University and the internal rules of the Faculty of Education and Integrated Arts and Sciences. Details of the assessment summary will be provided after the decision to hire is made.
4-3) The individual will be subject to an upper limit on their period of continuous employment if the following two conditions apply:
1) regardless of employment status, the individual has had an employment contract with the university subsequent to April 2013 and
2) has not ceased employment with the university for a period of six months or longer prior to the hiring date for this position. Therefore, in some cases, the statements above may not apply with regard to the contract period and the availability and duration of reappointment. In addition, depending on the continuous duration of an individual’s employment contract, there may be cases in which the individual will not be considered eligible for selection for the status in question (i.e., the tenure-track position).
